Central Otago Women's Support Link is a non profit organisation that operates a 24 hour telephone crisis line to provide practical assistance, information, support and accommodation to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The geographic area covered is the entire Central Otago District, the Roxburgh District and the Maniototo District. All the townships in these areas have many families living in farming communities so isolated that the nearest township is at least an hours drive away. Funding was sought to cover the travel costs of crisis line workers attending supervision and training.
Mr Randall was to undergo spinal surgery in Wellington. While ACC were able to cover his wife Janice's costs to Wellington they were given no financial support to cover her accommodation costs. Rural Communities Trust were able to assist which enabled Janice to accompany her husband to Wellington.
The Kapa Haka group at Ahipara Primary School wanted to travel to the National Kapa Haka Championships at the Tai Tokerau Festival to defend its title but were unable to attend due to the costs and distance.
"Fundraising initiatives were hampered by the economic capabilities of the community so an application was made to the Rural Communities Trust and we were happy to help", says Chrissy Pedersen.
