Yes! The Transpower/Rural Communities Trust Education Grants are scholarship grants awarded to young people from rural areas. These are awarded annually for those studying towards a tertiary qualification. The grants can be used to meet a range of student expenses and recognise the extra travel and distance from family can be a barrier to a tertiary education.
As a general rule the Trust will not fund overseas travel, wages and salaries, vehicle purchases, set-up costs or on-going funding.
Over 40 companies are members of the RCT. These companies understand the challenges faced by rural communities.
Principal members include PGG Wrightson, Merial NZ Ltd, Federated Farmers of NZ Inc, ANZ National Bank of New Zealand, Transpower New Zealand Ltd, Telecom New Zealand Ltd, Farmers Mutual Group and Genetic Technologies Ltd.
To date, over 850 grants have been approved, totalling over $600,000.
